Moina
Moina macrocopa commonly know as Moina are a very small freshwater crustaceans that make a great live food for small fish and other organisms in freshwater aquariums, outdoor ponds, lakes or for fish breeding. Moina differ from their daphnia cousins in size, as the adults are much smaller, ranging between 400 microns to 1,000 microns depending on their stage in life. Therefore they are a great live fish feeds for fish fry, fish fingerlings, finicky eaters and smaller fish. They are also algae, bacterivores and detritivores and will help provide clearer bodies of water by consuming phytoplankton and using this energy to reproduce and feed the food chain.
Hydralife only grows our moina from the best quality live foods to ensure the moina provide the highest level of nutrition to your fish. Our indoor facility provides the great care and respect for our products while ensuring all products are pathogen free and in excellent health.
Moina are a great addition to outdoor ponds as they will feed off of water borne phytoplankton and therefore keep your water clearer of algae. Moina also reproduce easily which provides your fish with a sustainable food source, especially if your fish breed or your keep minnows to support larger fish populations. Moina will also consume insect larva and because of their tiny size they escape predation easier than other water fleas.
Based on the smaller size of moina, they are excellent to be used in fish breeding operations. Their swimming motion and small size entices natural fish feeing, hunting and exercise for fish fry, fish fingerlings and other small fish. Moina are high in protein and other minerals which is valuable to the development of fish during the early stages of their life. Hydralife jars provide plenty of moina to start cultures if one is seeking to do so.
Overall, Moina make feeding your freshwater aquarium fish exciting and they add nutrition and fun to your fishes meal. They are also a great addition for many reasons, both as a sustainable food source and for algae mitigation, to enhance your ponds, lakes and waterways biodiversity and provide improvement to the ecosystem.
